Focus Groups

In the afternoon of the Immigrants and Community Colleges conference, there will be an opportunity to participate in one of five focus groups.  They are as follows:

High School Student Focus

This group will discuss topics related to high school students who are foreign-born or from immigrant households and their views on higher education and the opportunities available at community colleges.

Community College Student Focus

This group will discuss issues surrounding current community college students who are foreign-born or from immigrant households.  Discussions will include first generation college attendance, obstacles in maneuvering the administrative and financial aid systems, and aspirations post community college.

Business Community Focus

This group will discuss the skills sets business are looking for, how community colleges can fill those needs, recruiting opportunities, and future needs in the workforce.

Transfer Students Focus

This group will discuss transfer students and the opportunities and challenges they face when making the leap from community college to a four-year college. Other topics will include support systems that are in place or are needed to aid transfer students.

Community College/University Administrators and Faculty Focus

This group will discuss issues related to students who are foreign-born or from immigrant households at the faculty members' and administrators' respective institutions.  Identifying existing and planned programs to support students in this population will be valuable.
