IIR Graduate Research Assistant Aditi Goel was honored to receive The Wendy Balazik Communication and Social Change Award, an academic distinction established in 2009 by the George Mason University Department of Communication. The award recognizes outstanding graduate students whose work demonstrates a commitment to using communication scholarship to drive meaningful community impact and social change. It was created in memory of Wendy Balazik, a George Mason University graduate student and media coordinator for the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In 2008, while one year away from completing her master’s degree, Balazik was diagnosed with lung cancer and later passed away. Known for her dedication to community service, including volunteering at local soup kitchens, her legacy continues to inspire a philosophy of service. Recipients of the award often embrace her motto, “Get Busy Living,” as a guiding principle for translating academic work into tangible societal benefit.

Aditi’s selection was informed by a health communication consulting project conducted in partnership with the Fairfax County Health Department. The aim of her research was to develop a mental health awareness flyer for potential use in local schools, in collaboration with high school students. The project emphasized participatory communication approaches that translate research into practical, community-centered interventions.

Her broader academic and professional work focuses on mental health, well-being, faith, and role conflict, with an emphasis on communication strategies that foster positive social outcomes. As a Graduate Research Assistant at the Institute for Immigration Research, Aditi supports communications, storytelling, and multimedia initiatives that amplify immigrant experiences and connect research with broader communities. Beyond her work, she volunteers with the Meditation Museum, contributes to dance productions, and shares her love of baking with others. Reflecting Wendy Balazik’s motto, “Get Busy Living,” she continues to balance scholarship, service, and creativity in ways that contribute to community well-being.
