IIR Spotlight Interview: Christophe Vitello

Christophe Vitello is a George Mason University undergraduate student who worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Immigration Research (IIR) in the 2025-2026 academic year. With academic interests in cultural anthropology, folklore, and visual storytelling, Chris joined IIR through George Mason’s Office of Student Creative Activities and Research (OSCAR) program, contributing to the Leaving and Belonging Digital Storytelling project. Throughout the project, Chris interviewed George Mason students and produced short videos about their experiences with moving, home, and belonging.

Since beginning his studies at George Mason, Chris has become increasingly passionate about using film and other visual mediums to “center people’s voices” and “make research accessible.” Conducting interviews and sharing lived experiences of George Mason students made the Leaving and Belonging project very special for him. Chris described his experience at IIR as both meaningful and transformative, emphasizing how the project allowed him to connect art, research, and community-centered work. He also reflected on the mentorship he received at IIR, noting that the supportive and ethically grounded environment helped him grow as both a researcher and creative practitioner.

Chris came to value listening to others’ stories throughout IIR outreach and collaborations with other George Mason organizations. He witnessed the care and strength students bring when sharing their lived experiences. Reflecting on his journey, Chris encouraged other students to pursue opportunities even if they do not feel fully prepared to do so. His advice: “you do not have to be perfect to begin—what matters most is curiosity, care, and a willingness to grow.”
