Selected Year
Whether serving in the military, gracing the small or big screen or stage, starting businesses, working in world-class kitchens, composing music, competing in sports, advancing science or medicine, or serving in public office, immigrants have contributed to every aspect of life in the United States and have been part of the American story.
As the United States commemorates its 250th anniversary, explore this interactive historical digital timeline featuring population data, key policies, and notable immigrants who made lasting contributions to the United States. By pairing data with personal narratives, this timeline brings to life the lived experiences behind the statistics.
A special thank you to the George Mason University CHSSWeb team, Craig Zaccaro and Melanie White; the Immigrant Learning Center; the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress; and the staff and students at the IIR who contributed to this project: Dr. Marissa Kiss, Zach Nauful, Jonathan Escamilla, and Aditi Goel.
USA 250 Commemorative Experience
America at 250
An interactive view of U.S. population growth, immigration, and historical change.
*Please note that although U.S. Census Bureau data was used to examine population counts, there are limitations to historical data, including gaps in records and undercounting of marginalized individuals such as undocumented individuals, migrant workers, women, Indigenous peoples, children, enslaved people, temporary workers or students, and people who entered before contemporary record systems. Additional limits of historical data include changing categories over time (e.g. race, ethnicity, nationality), laws and policies that shape what gets recorded, and potential political biases in reporting. Because no historical dataset is complete, it is important to consider and acknowledge the limitations of data and the fact that there will always be missing data. That is why it is important to include stories and other sources, as this timeline does, to help fill in potential gaps.
