IIR Migration Working Group - November

Thursday, November 9, 2023 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM EST

The Institute for Immigration Research (IIR) Migration Working Group is an informal space that brings together students and faculty across levels and departments. The aim of the Migration Working Group is to provide students and faculty opportunities to workshop and receive feedback on early-stage projects and works in progress, share our migration research, and learn with one another to strengthen our research projects.

We will meet once a month for one hour in a hybrid format. Each meeting will include two informal presentations and discussions of emerging migration-related projects.

Our November meeting plans to feature research from:

  • Umida Hashimova, IIR Graduate Research Assistant and PhD Student, Sociology and Anthropology Department, George Mason University

    • Unauthorized Crossings of Central Asians at the U.S.-Mexico Border: The unauthorized entry of migrants from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to the U.S. through the Mexico border was at a historic high in 2021 and 2022. The increase in apprehensions ranged from 400% to 7,000% in fiscal year 2022 compared to previous years. What social changes are taking place, and what are the causes and consequences of the sudden influx?

If you are interested in workshopping your research in the future, please reach out to iir[at]gmu.edu.
