Umida Hashimova is a doctorate student and a graduate research assistant at the Institute for Immigration Research. Her primary research centers around the leverages migration tends to give to migrant receiving countries over migrant sending countries.
Umida returned to academia after years of experience as a researcher and analyst with federal research and consultancy roles. Umida is also a contributor to The Diplomat, Jamestown Foundation, and Central Asia-Caucasus Institute exploring geopolitical and foreign policy issues in Central Asia examining topics like migration, the roles of China and Russia in the region, water-related issues, trade routes, and trade cooperation.
Umida maintains a personal blog at https://umidahashimova.com, which revolves around Central Asia and migration-related themes. Her academic background comprises a Master in Public Policy with a specialization in International Economics from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University and Master of Arts in Human Rights Law from the University of Essex. Umida’s master’s thesis at the University of Essex explored labor migration and international law and compared Uzbekistan’s domestic laws with the international conventions, aiming to identify discrepancies in migrant protection clauses.
