Filipino Immigrants in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Area
There are approximately 47,000 Filipino immigrants in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Area. The counties with the largest shares of Filipino immigrants as a percentage of the total foreign-born population include Madison County (19%), Falls Church City (14%), and Clarke County (13%) in Virginia and Charles County (14%) and Calvert County (12%) in Maryland. The southern portion of Madison County around the city of Radiant reported that 69% of the foreign-born population were born in the Philippines. In the eastern and southeastern portion of Clark County, 88% of immigrants were born in the Philippines.

Meet a Filipino Immigrant
Dr. Al Fuertes is an Associate Professor at George Mason University in the School of Integrative Studies. He was born and raised in Mindanao, one of the southernmost islands of the Philippines, before moving to the United States in 1995. Dr. Fuertes received a Bachelor of Theology from Silliman University in Dumaguete, Philippines in 1990, and a Masters of Arts in Peace Studies from the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana in 1997. He then went on to earn a PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University in 2007. Dr. Fuertes has taught courses on conflict and trauma healing as well as psychosocial trauma healing. He was recently promoted to a full-time Mason professor. In the future, Dr. Fuertes hopes to “sustain a degree of satisfaction [and] fulfillment” and to “develop more meaning relationships, friendships, [and] strengthen bonds with my loved ones…”
